Field Chemist / Environmental Specialist

Full-Time Permanent, Non-Exempt

The Field Chemist/Environmental Specialist is responsible for conducting safety inspections and chemical surveys in science laboratories, hazardous materials inventories, field data transcription, and report drafting. This employee conducts research pertaining to chemical reagents classification and hazards as outlined by regulatory agencies. In addition, this employee is responsible for hazardous waste segregation, packaging, labeling, profiling, manifesting and shipment in accordance with federal and state regulations for proper disposal. The qualified individual comes across a rare opportunity to expand their experience and training in other areas of industrial hygiene/environmental compliance in support of professional growth and development goals.

 

Primary duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to: 

  • Sound understanding of applicable state & federal regulations and codes of practice
  • Transcribe field data and report drafting for various inventories and inspections
  • Segregate, classify, lab-packing / bulking of RCRA, Non-RCRA, flammable, corrosive, toxic, oxidizer, reactive and other hazardous waste types
  • Prepare profiles, manifest, land-ban forms, and other required documentation for the transportation and disposal of hazardous wastes. Coordinate transportation and disposal of hazardous waste with disposal facilities.
  • Responsible for preparing daily tailgate safety meeting, project consumables, daily work reports, and other forms of project documentation detailing
  • Conduct regulatory research in support of hazardous waste management programs
  • Conduct health and safety inspections and chemical inventories in laboratory settings
  • Conduct hazardous materials business plan (HMBP) inspections, CERS online reporting, and regulatory agency compliance follow up for clients
  • Conduct hazardous materials inventories and reporting to comply with various state regulatory standards

Minimum Requirements:

  • Time management, teamwork and multi-tasking skills
  • Flexibility with work demands and deadlines that may require extended office or field working timelines, and willingness to travel outside of the Bay Area as needed for project work.  Occasional work on weekends and/or holidays may be required
  • Ability to lift 40 pounds, stand and/or walk 8 + hours each day
  • Enter high hazard environments and other areas where hazardous material/waste is present
  • Produce reporting that is accurate and shows a high degree of attention to details
  • Excellent written (report writing) and verbal communication skills
  • Software such as Excel, Word, FileMaker Pro
  • Valid California class C driver’s license and satisfactory driving record
  • Obtain medical clearance to wear tight-fitting respirators for field work
  • Minimum B.S. degree in Chemistry, Biology, Environmental Sciences or a related field, or equivalent work experience
  • 40-hour current HAZWOPER certificate required
